The project is completing pre-mining construction activities. In October 2021, slurry wall and underdrain construction began. The slurry wall consists of a 3-foot wide trench that is kept open with the support of a bentonite slurry. The trench is backfilled with a low-permeability material the minimizes the flow of water into or out of the mine cell. The backfill is a mixture of clay staged along the slurry wall alignment, limited gravel excavated from the trench, and added bentonite. This forms a low permeability barrier that will allow the mine to be reclaimed as a reservoir. The slurry wall excludes groundwater from entering the mining cell during mining operations and will retain water stored within the completed water reservoirs. The slurry wall is a critical component for water reservoirs to meet state leakage criteria.

Construction of the slurry wall has been temporarily paused due to weather. We will restart slurry wall construction when weather conditions improve.

Additional Aggregate Industries contractors may be in the project area surveying and completing other pre-construction investigation activities.
